Petrol prices in the UAE are likely to drop for the month of May 2025 as prices plunged in April due to the US tariff row and concerns around a slowdown in the global economy and recessionary fears.
Globally, Brent fell as low as $62.8 per barrel in early April as tariff war escalated. Brent mostly traded in the $60s a barrel range in April.
Globally, Brent was trading at $66.9 and WTI at $63.13 on Monday morning. It averaged $66.6 a barrel in April compared to nearly $71 a barrel last month.
In the UAE, petrol prices were reduced for the second consecutive month in April 2025 with Super 98, Special 95 and E-Plus 91 selling at Dh2.57, Dh2.46 and Dh2.38 per litre, respectively. Petrol prices for the upcoming month are usually revised on the last day of each passing month.
The UAE linked its local retail petrol prices to international benchmarks in 2015 as part of its deregulation drive.
In addition to the tariff, Opec+ decision to increase oil production much faster than expected also weighed on the crude oil prices.
Saxo Bank said in its second-quarter outlook earlier this month that Brent crude to trade within a $65-$85 per barrel range.
“We have seen the US administration tighten sanctions on the Iranian oil trading network, and this was followed up when President Donald Trump declared that the US will enforce a 25 per cent tariff on any nation importing Venezuelan crude.
“Although the immediate market impact might be minimal, apart from supporting additional short covering from underinvested hedge funds, this action indicates a definite change, potentially signalling the White House’s willingness to sacrifice low oil prices to achieve wider strategic objectives—isolating Iran and Venezuela and increasing pressure on China,” the investment bank said in a note.
