Good news for youngsters who want to get behind the wheel, the UAE driving age has just been lowered.
The United Arab Emirates has announced that a major change has been made to the national traffic laws.
Now, the minimum UAE driving age for cars and light has been lowered from 18-years-old to 17-years-old.
But the change won’t kick in until March 29 2025, so anyone who has just turned 17 still faces a wait to hit the road.
The change has been announced via the UAE Government’s X, formerly Twitter, account and outlined a whole host of other changes to the traffic law.
The government briefing says that vehicle classification has been adjusted to fall in line with technological advances which have led to wider availability of self-driving and electric vehicles.
The UAE has also made adjustments to the conditions and procedures for inspecting, registering, licensing, re-registering and renewing self-driving vehicles.
Pedestrians will also no longer be allowed to cross any roads in the Dubai and the rest of the country where the speed limit is higher than 80 km per hour. And if you do cross one of these roads then you will face criminal charges.
The UAE has also prohibited the driving of vehicles that make a lot of noise – including use of alarm devices within cities except when these are used to prevent danger or accidents.
The changes also include the prohibiting of hazardous materials or unusual loads expect with a permit issued by the relevant authority.
Deterrent penalties, especially when causing the death of a person, have also been introduced including for anyone escaping the scene of an accident or crossing the road from non-designated places or driving in a valley while floods are running.
