One of Dubai’s Oldest and Busiest Bridges Faces Major Closure until 2025

One of Dubai’s busiest bridges will be closed for long periods of time until 2025, the RTA has announced.

Al Maktoum Bridge will be closed between 11pm and 5pm on Monday to Saturday and all day on Sunday until Thursday January 16 2025.

The bridge connects Bur Dubai – which is home to Dubai Frame, Dubai Garden Glow, WAFI Mall – with Deira – home to the Gold Souq, the Clocktower and plenty of museums.

First opened in 1963, it is one of the oldest road bridges in Dubai. It was built to allow people to cross between Bur Dubai and Deira quickly without using an Abra.

As it is an older bridge, it requires regular maintenance to keep up with the standards that the RTA has for its infrastructure.

During closing hours for Al Maktoum Bridge, the RTA has suggested alternative routes to keep that notorious Dubai traffic flowing.

If you are travelling towards Bur Dubai from Deira, the following four routes have been suggested:

  • Al Shindagha Tunnel through Baniyas Road and Al Khaleej Street
  • Infinity Bridge through Baniyas Road, Al Khaleej Street and Corniche Street
  • Business Bay Crossing Bridge through Baniyas Road, Sheikh Rashid Road and Rebat Street
  • Al Garhoud Bridge through Baniyas Road and Sheikh Rashid Road

And if you are travelling to Deira from Bur Dubai, the following three routes have been suggested:

  • Al Garhoud Bridge through Oud Metha Road and Sheikh Rashid Road
  • Infinity Bridge or Al Shindagha Tunnel through Tariq Bin Ziyad Road, Khalid Bin Al Waleed Road and Al Khaleej Street
  • Business Bay Crossing Bridge through Oud Metha Road and Al Khail Road Dubai
