Abu Dhabi’s speed limits are about to change on two major highways

Have you been putting pedal to the metal? Not anymore.

If you’re used to cruising through Abu Dhabi at top speed, it’s time to dial it down.

From Sunday April 14, speed limits on two of the capital’s busiest highways are getting a 20kmph trim – so keep an eye on those speed signs (and your speedometer).

The speed limit on Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed International Road (E11) will be reduced from 160 km/h to 140 km/h, effective April 14th, 2025. pic.twitter.com/JBD4ky4xR9— أبوظبي للتنقل | AD Mobility (@ad_mobility) April 9, 2025

Here’s the deal:

  1. On the Abu Dhabi – Sweihan Road (E20), the limit is dropping from 120kmph to 100kmph.
  2. On the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed International Road (E11), the limit is being reduced from 160kmph to 140kmph.

The change comes as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and reduce the number of serious accidents across the emirate. It’s not the first time authorities have looked at tweaking the rules of the road and it likely won’t be the last.

So, whether you’re a daily commuter, heading out for a desert drive, or en route to a Friday brunch in another emirate, plan ahead and adjust your speed.

And don’t forget – speed cameras are always watching.

Stay safe out there, Abu Dhabi.
