US Pushes to Reopen Strait of Hormuz as Iranian Attacks on UAE Strain Ceasefire

News we’re following:

  • The United Arab Emirates on Monday said it came under attack by Iran for the first time since a fragile ceasefire took hold in early April. Authorities in the eastern emirate of Fujairah said an Iranian drone sparked a fire at a key oil facility, and the British military reported two cargo vessels ablaze off the UAE.
  • The attacks by Iran appeared to be in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier on Monday, the U.S. reported that two American-flagged merchant ships had successfully transited the critical waterway as part of a new safeguarding initiative. Shortly after the attacks, the U.S. military said it battled Iranian forces and sank six small boats.
  • Early on Tuesday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on X that both the U.S. and the UAE “should be wary of being dragged back into quagmire.” In similarly vague terms, Iranian state television earlier quoted an anonymous military official as saying Tehran had had “no plan” to target the UAE or one of its oil fields.
  • Trump on Saturday said he was reviewing a new Iranian proposal to end the war but expressed skepticism that it would lead to a deal. Trump, meanwhile, also claimed that the war has been “terminated”because of the ceasefire — an interpretation that would allow him to skirt congressional approval for the conflict.
