Today’s the Day You can Get Four Black Points Scrapped from your Driving Licence

Dubai motorists from today onwards will have the chance to get four pesky black points deducted from their licence as part of a government initiative.

On Accident Free Day, this year, you’ll be able to get rid of those black marks against your record which, if they pile up to more than 24 points, could lead to a driving ban.

And the best bit? It could not be simpler to do.

The Ministry of the Interior revealed that Accident Free Day is set to fall on Monday August 26 this year.

And if you sign up for a traffic safety pledge and, crucially, don’t break it then you’ll get a whole four black points off your driving licence.

Brigadier Engineer Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, chairman of the Federal Traffic Council, explained that the campaign is part of the ministry’s broader strategy to enhance traffic safety and align with the UAE government’s vision for road safety.

He emphasised that the campaign aims to foster a culture of responsible driving by educating drivers on vehicle safety, adhering to speed limits near schools, avoiding distractions such as mobile phones, following traffic lanes, maintaining safe distances, prioritizing pedestrians, and giving precedence to emergency vehicles.

The Accident Free Day traffic pledge

The traffic pledge is easy peasy so with a bit of common sense, you’ll get it knocked off in no time at all. Below is the pledge in full.

  • I will maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of me
  • I will yield to pedestrians at crossings
  • I will always wear my seatbelt
  • I will adhere to the speed limits
  • I will not use a handheld mobile phone while driving
  • I will give way to emergency vehicles, police, public service vehicles, and official convoys

See? We did say it was simple.

If you’re able to keep the pledge, which you can sign up for via the Ministry of Interior or Dubai Police, then the black points will be scrapped on Saturday September 14.

What can I get black points for when driving in Dubai?

According to Dubai Police, you can receive black points and fines for the following:

  • Failure to leave a safe distance from the vehicle ahead: Dhs400 fine and four black points.
  • Failure to give way to pedestrians crossing the road: Dh500 fine and six black points.
  • Not wearing a seatbelt: Dhs400 fine and four black points.
  • Using mobile phones while driving: Dhs800 fine and four black points.
