The pulse of Downtown Dubai is about to beat faster than ever. In a landmark move to future-proof the city’s urban core, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has joined forces with Emaar Properties to launch a transformative expansion of the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station. This strategic evolution isn’t just about space; it’s a total reimagining of how millions access the world’s most iconic landmarks.
The project is set to ignite a massive 65 per cent surge in capacity, catapulting the station’s hourly throughput from 7,250 to a staggering 12,320 passengers. Once complete, the station will be equipped to handle a daily tide of up to 220,000 commuters, ensuring that even during the legendary New Year’s Eve spectacles and major holidays, the flow of the city remains effortless.
The agreement, signed by HE Mattar Al Tayer (RTA) and HE Mohamed Alabbar (Emaar), will see the station’s footprint expand from 6,700 to 8,500 square metres. Beyond size, the upgrade introduces a “qualitative leap” in engineering: separate entry and exit gates will be installed to streamline footfall, alongside an array of new escalators, lifts, and expanded concourses.
This architectural evolution also prioritizes the “last mile” of travel, integrating seamless connections for e-scooters, bicycles, and public transport, all while maintaining the station’s iconic shell-inspired aesthetic. As passenger numbers continue to climb—reaching nearly 11 million annually—this expansion cements the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station as the world-class gateway to the heart of Dubai’s 2040 urban vision.
