International Labor Day, a Global Opportunity to Celebrate and Recognize Dedication of Workers around the World

Workers in the Middle East and Africa have played an integral role in economic growth and development highlighting the resilience and commitment of works in the Middle East and Africa

The world observed May Day on Monday. It is also known as International Labor Day – a day set aside to honor the accomplishments and sacrifices of workers all around the world. This annual holiday, which is observed on May 1st, honors the commitment and labor of employees across numerous sectors and businesses, including those in the Middle East and Africa.

The UAE is regarded as a hub for workers from around the world. Its robust economy, welcoming tax laws, alluring lifestyle, and numerous job prospects for both skilled and unskilled people make it an attractive destination for short- and long-term residence. The nation’s diverse economy, which is supported by a variety of industries including oil and gas, construction, finance, tourism, and technology also offers employment to thousands of expatriates. The UAE is also a lucrative place for low wage works like domestic help, drivers, and construction workers. The UAE has attracted top talent and enticed highly qualified workers in fields like science, engineering, finance, and technology.

Over the years, workers in the Middle East and Africa have made considerable progress in the labor movement despite several obstacles, significantly enhancing their society and economies. Thanks for labor reforms, workers have gained better working conditions and labor safeguards through the introduction of labor laws and regulations, paving the way for enhanced job possibilities and higher economic growth.

Additionally, the growth and development of the economies in the Middle East and Africa have been greatly aided by the workforce. Many people work in sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and services, which help with the creation, production, and provision of goods and services.

A good example is the growth of Ethiopia’s textile sector is one prominent success story. Ethiopia has developed into a center for textile manufacturing thanks to government support and advantageous laws, creating jobs for thousands of people and boosting the economy of the nation. 1. Rights of Domestic Workers: In 2017, a law was passed in the UAE giving housemaids, cooks, and nannies the same rights as other workers. This included the right to keep their passports and a weekly day off in addition to 30 days of paid annual leave.

The government of Abu Dhabi has invested in brand-new, specially designed housing for workers, while in Dubai, developers are now obligated to offer workers high-quality lodging on their construction sites.

Additionally, a new online portal for filing labor disputes has been made available by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, making it simpler for employees to lodge complaints and monitor their progress.
