Earthquake of Magnitude 6.1 Strikes off Oman Coast

Earthquake epicenter is about 319 km from Masirah Island, with a depth of 26 km

The Earthquake monitoring Center at Sultan Qaboos University recorded an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale in the Arabian Sea at 7:24 am today.

The epicenter is about 319 km from Masirah Island, with a depth of 26 km.

Light tremors of magnitude 4.1 were also felt last month in Duqm area of Al Wusta Governorate in the Sultanate of Oman. Frequent tremors have added concerns among the public following the catastrophic earthquake that hit Turkiye and Syria recently, which left thousands dead and millions homeless.

Dr Issa Al Hussein, Director of the Seismological Center of the Sultan Qaboos University says that there is a need to build more earthquake-resistant infrastructure in the Sultanate of Oman. He said that Oman has in the past recorded light earthquakes but should be ready in future with more earthquake-resistant buildings.
