Starting January 2025, residents and businesses in Dubai will notice a slight increase in their sewerage charges, as Dubai Municipality rolls out a revised tariff structure.
For the first time in a decade, the city will gradually hike these fees in phases, making its way to higher rates by 2027.
The new rates will begin at 1.5 fils per gallon of water in 2025, rising to 2 fils per gallon in 2026, and reaching 2.8 fils per gallon by 2027.
While this may sound like a small amount, it adds up over time and will be reflected in your water and electricity bills, as Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) collects the fee.
Despite all of that, the good news is that this increase remains well below the global average.
According to Dubai Municipality, the fee revision aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which aims to accommodate its rapidly growing population.
As Dubai continues to attract residents, businesses, and tourists from around the world, the city’s infrastructure needs to keep up. By 2026, Dubai’s population is set to surpass 4 million. And by 2040, Dubai’s population is projected to hit 7.8 million.
Today, it sits around just over 3 million.
The goal here is to make sure the city has sustainable water usage and efficient sewage systems.
This increase is part of broader efforts to promote water conservation and make sure that Dubai’s infrastructure is as cutting-edge and future-ready as it can be.
While it’s the first hike since 2015, the municipality confirmed that these adjustments would help maintain the high quality of services that we as Dubai residents expect.
So, as your water bill creeps up over the next few years, remember — it’s all part of building a smarter, more sustainable Dubai for the future.
