Confusion Deepens in Strait of Hormuz after Iran Attacks 3 Ships

Major developments we’re monitoring:

  • The Islamic Republic said it fired on three outbound ships and seized two, calling it retaliation for the American naval blockade of Iranian ports and for the U.S. firing on and seizing an Iranian ship at the Strait of Hormuz that did not stop when hailed by a vessel enforcing the blockade. The attacks unfolded just a day after U.S. President Donald Trump said he would extend the two-week ceasefire with Iran.
  • In southern Lebanon, three separate Israeli strikes killed at least six people and wounded others, according to local authorities. Israel denied carrying out one of the strikes and did not immediately comment on the others. The attacks came as Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors prepared for a new meeting Thursday in Washington toward extending a fragile 10-day ceasefire that began last week.
  • The U.S. Senate voted against a Democratic attempt to halt Trump’s war in Iran, rejecting the resolution 46-51 on Wednesday as Republicans in Congress have largely backed Trump’s military efforts. It was the fifth time this year that the Senate voted to cede its war powers to the president in a conflict that Democrats say is illegal and unjustified.
