Iran says ‘Prohibited Zone’ near Hormuz to Cover Parts of Gulf of Oman and Beyond

Iran’s Guards said on Wednesday that a new “prohibited zone” outside the Strait of Hormuz would cover parts of the Gulf of Oman and beyond, adding they would announce the exact coordinates later.

“It approximately starts from the direction of Chabahar, covering part of the Sea of Oman and another part of the Arabian Sea… If a vessel enters that area without coordination, it will be subject to our sanctions,” Guards spokesman Hossein Mohebi told state television.

Washington destroys five oil tankers, Jordan intercepts ballistic missiles

Tensions across the Gulf are escalating rapidly after the US military reportedly destroyed five Iranian oil tankers early Wednesday, in what Washington says was retaliation for repeated Iranian missile attacks on a US Navy warship. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has since warned tanker crews near Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports to evacuate, while explosions were also reported on Iran’s Kharg Island. The escalation follows a separate missile attack on Jordan and a sharp jump in oil prices, with Brent crude nearing $98 a barrel.
