RTA Dubai Gears Up for Umm Suqeim Street Upgrade of Dhs332 million

Umm Suqeim Street is one of Dubai’s main thoroughfares, and plans for a Dhs332m upgrade could make traffic move faster.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai said in a statement that a contract has been given to improve Umm Suqeim Street. The project will run for 4.6 km, from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

As part of the project, an 800-meter-long tunnel with four lanes in each way will be built on Umm Suqeim Street near Kings School to improve the intersection with Al Barsha South Street. The RTA says that as part of the project, a “signalised” surface junction will also be built.

In a statement, Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said that the project is necessary to improve connections between streets that run east to west and streets that run north to south.

Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road are the four main roads in Dubai that this project tries to connect better. It will make the streets better able to handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour going both ways. This will make traffic move more smoothly and cut the time it takes to get from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Khail Road by a large amount, from 9.7 minutes to 3.8 minutes, Al Tayer said.

“This project will help a lot of different residential and development areas, like Dubai Hills, Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, and others.” It is thought that about two million people live in these places, Al Tayer said.

The improvements also follow orders from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, to make the road network’s infrastructure better to keep up with Dubai’s steady growth, meet the needs of cities and people, and keep traffic moving smoothly.

New RTA improvements
The changes will also be the most recent ones made to this stretch of road.

From the intersection of Sheikh Zayed Road to the intersection of Al Khail Road, Umm Suqeim Street was widened by the RTA in 2013. As part of this project, three pedestrian bridges and two bridges with three lanes in each way were built. In order to connect the roads and bridges that lead to the Dubai Hills Mall project, a bridge was built on Umm Suqeim Street where it meets the entry to Dubai Hills and Al Barsha.

The RTA opened a central 500-meter bridge in 2020 as part of the project to build roads and bridges that lead to Dubai Hills Mall. The bridge is at the point where Umm Suqeim Street meets the entry to Dubai Hills and Al Barsha. There are four lines going each way, and up to 16,000 cars can go through it every hour.
